Exports
of domestic textiles and apparels increased sharply in 2002.
So did the profit margin of cotton textile enterprises.
In early 2003, domestic cotton price increased 22.6%, 14.5% higher than the international
cotton price. Even the government realized the imbalance in profit distribution
within the industry.
In the second quarter, with the breakout of SARS, many enterprises were in hot
water, as many orders were missed.
After the rise and fall, many enterprises began to ponder upon the following
issues:
Would cotton price continue to rise?
The international demand and supply of cotton;
The demand and supply of chemical fiber and staple fiber;
The textile industry in India and Pakistan;
The competitiveness of domestic textiles and apparels;
The influence of trade barriers on exports;
The influence of SARS and countermeasures against accidents;
New products and technologies home and abroad;
On September 3-5, leaders and experts from Ministry of Commerce of PRC, China
Cotton Textile Association, US, India, Pakistan and some famous domestic enterprises
attended the conference and had a deep discussion on the above-mentioned issues.
