Italy's Prato clothing production drops

Text size
According to Confindustria, the garment industry in Prato experienced a decline in production in the first two quarters of 2019, with more than 5,000 of apparel mills being Chinese.

In the first two quarters of 2019, the garment industry in Prato, Italy's largest clothing production province, saw its first decline in production for more than 20 years, Confindustria said at a press conference on its 2019 annual industrial report. The production decreased by 4.6%-5% compared to the previous year.

More than 5,000apparel mills in Prato are Chinese companies, with only a small proportion of Italian apparel mills. In the past 20 years, the clothing industry has developed rapidly, and the production has been growing steadily. As a result, the number of people engaged in the clothing industry (more than 20,000people) in the region has exceeded the number of people engaged in the textile industry (about 19,000people), creating many jobs. The decline in production in 2019 surprised and worried the Confindustria, indicating that production in other region was not optimistic either.
